now this is what I call fall weather

So I think the high this weekend was maybe 70 degrees...you have GOT to love that!

I hear it's supposed to get warm again this week before it cools off again over the weekend...great.

Talk about your unplugged weekends...I pretty much did nothing yesterday, and I've followed that up with another day of nothingness today. It's pretty great.

Oh, I had a car accident on Friday...some lady back-ended me on Old Montgomery Highway in Hoover on the way to work Friday morning. I'm okay, it just jarred my neck pretty good. My car isn't that badly banged up, but at least I won't have to pay for it to get fixed. The lady who hit me, her insurance company has already called me and we've got it all set up for next week to take the car in for an estimate.

Christy and I are headed down to Oxford this weekend to catch Ole Miss and Alabama. And I'm hoping my Dad can come through for me and get me a ticket to the UT game next weekend...I'm super psyched for that...

Other than all that, pretty quiet weekend...

All I really wanted to say here was thank God it's fall.

just more proof

Never let it be said that I don't lack brain power sometimes.

Most nights, as Christy and I get ready for bed, we let our dog, Sophie, out to go to the bathroom one last time before we turn in. Last night, we did this very thing, and after we let her back in, we noticed something smelled awful...we thought maybe it was Sophie, but looking back on it now, I can't imagine that she got to smelling that bad in that short a period of time.

We thought nothing more of it and turned out the lights to go to sleep. After a short while, it seemed to get worse...I couldn't figure out what it was, but it was keeping me awake. You know how you get this smell in your nose and even if it's not there, sometimes you continue to smell it? That's how this was...and I admit now, I was obsessed at getting rid of this smell.

For those that don't know, I'm a fairly light sleeper, and on top of that, I don't fall right to sleep every night. It usually takes me a good 20-30 minutes to fall asleep each night. Trust me, I've done everything I can think of to remedy this...and nothing works.

So it gets to be around Midnight, and I'm freaking out just a bit at this smell, trying to figure it out. I get up and smell the dog...nothing. I look under the bed, behind the dresser...I can't locate it...Christy's still asleep, so I go to try and find some sort of air freshener to get rid of the smell.

The only thing I can find is this Pumpkin-scented "room perfume"...of course, I'm not sure how this works, and it's after Midnight, and so I pretty much don't care. I take the can into the bedroom and spray it a few times...then I get back into bed and wait...

In about 10 minutes, Christy is awake with this feeling of dread...and now I'm sensing it too...it's this feeling of being covered in a chemical-like smell of pumpkins, and on top of that, I still feel as if I smell the original stench too. Christy's awake, trying to figure out what it is that's caused this horrific smell. I play dumb at first because I'm so totally embarrassed that I sprayed too much of this room perfume crap...but finally I tell her what happened. She's not too happy with me...and I don't blame her. I apologize profusely and we resign ourselves to try and get to sleep through the wave of smells pelting us in the face.

Let's just say we didn't sleep all that well.

And let's just say I won't be responsible for room sanitation in the near future.

The worst part about this is I still feel like that first awful smell is in my nose...does anybody know of any way to get rid of this?!? (And please don't suggest taking a shower...I've done that already...bathed and everything...)

I'll be back later to talk about something cool...my very own podcast!

ever had this happen to you?

Good morning all.

Have you ever had this happen to you? You have a job that you're so good at, so efficient at, that you end up with time on your hands at your job, with nothing to do...literally nothing to do...?

That's what I'm facing right now with my new job. I like the work, don't get me wrong...but the job itself, I mean...these guys here are really doing a good job and we have it down pretty good...so good in fact that there is considerable downtime. Honestly, we have 4 people working on this project here, and we could get by with 3...maybe 2.

So I'm finding ways to keep busy...checking and re-checking things...things I would do once a week, I'm doing them 3-4 times per week. It's tedious, but at least I keep busy.

Relatively busy.

On another happy note, football Saturday is mere hours away now...Alabama v. Florida and Auburn v. South Carolina...both games should be entertaining.

Oh, and the Braves clinched a 14th straight NL East divisional title on Tuesday...ho hum...

Maybe if you're all lucky, you'll hear my take on the Braves and their improbable run...for now, though, back to 'work'.

Back again...again...

Hey all...so yeah, I'm back at this again.

Don't ask me where it's been, don't ask me why I haven't posted...I just haven't felt like it. But lately, I've felt like I wanted to get this thing going again, so I hope that's a good enough explanation for everyone.

Oh, and if you're getting this, you're a friend of mine in some form or fashion...but if you don't want to receive these blog updates, please feel free to email me at mattplanet@gmail.com and let me know...I'll be happy to remove you.

So let's see...I would say there's too much to tell since last I blogged, but that would be an understatement...big time. I quit Cingular, got a new job, participated in several broadcasts with the Barons (some of which I was on the air doing play-by-play myself!), went on vacation a couple of times, and oh yeah there were those hurricanes everybody's talking about... and probably some other stuff I'm leaving out, but hey, that's it in a nutshell.

I was perusing MSNBC.com this morning doing a little catching up on the news, and read an article about how Carnival Cruises has made a deal with FEMA and the US Government to let them use 3 of their cruise ships as living space for FEMA employees and evacuees of the New Orleans and Mobile disasters. I read that we're spending $236 million on this, which I think is a bit much...but if it helps recover from this, then I'm all for it.

I do think that one of the big issues in the 2008 election will be how the federal government handled this crisis. I think it's interesting that I was talking with my family on Sunday about the election and this Democratic Senator Barack Obama...he seems to be taking the lead on criticizing the federal government in this whole cruise ship situation. I wonder if he's trying to position himself for a run at the VP spot on the Democratic ticket in 2008...?

Speaking of The Ticket, this week's episode of "The West Wing" was especially good! The beginning part which was 3 years in the future was especially cool. Those of you who aren't already watching this show...what is wrong with ya?!?

Anyway, that's it for now...thanks for reading. :)

on the air

If anybody is in the Birmingham metro area tonight and wants to hear me on the radio, tune into 101.1 FM and you'll hear me in just a few minutes. :) I'm once again helping the Barons with press box duties, one of which is doing the MLB scoreboard updates in the 3rd inning, 6th inning and the postgame report.

So yeah, if you're around and want to hear me...just tune in. Sorry for your out-of-towners...101.1 FM can't be heard over the internet...yet. Keep yer fingers crossed on that one for the future.

guess who's back

*deep sigh*

I am...big woo.

Back at work today...had a wonderful time in the islands with my wonderful wife. We saw the Bahamas (twice), St. Thomas and Tortola, as well as lots and lots of water. We had a blast and the trip was well worth it.

Now the real world is staring me in the face. We received our new manager preference forms today and there's a good chance my shift is about to dramatically change. I'm going to take it in stride though, as I always do, because I know I can persevere and climb the seniority list.

There's a wedding this weekend that I'm very much looking forward to...Elise and George are getting married this weekend! I know I can't wait to attend this wedding, it will be a blast I'm sure and I couldn't be happier for both Elise and George.

I'll be uploading the pics from our vacation tonight or tomorrow, so I'll have the link up for that later this week.

For now...back to the work.

can you feel the breeze?

It's 4:35 am CST right now and I'm waiting for my rocket to come.

Our flight to Fort Lauderdale Airport leaves in just under 2 hours. We're packed and ready to go...the sunscreen, the iPod(s), the books, the clothes, it's all there. In less than 6 hours, we'll be aboard the ms Zuiderdam for a 7-day Caribbean cruise.

All I can say is it's about time.

So if anybody wants me the next 7 days...I'll be somewhere close to here...
